About me and my therapy practice

Working exclusively with children and young people.

I am an integrative counsellor, qualified to work with children and young people aged from 8-24. This means that I use a variety of therapeutic approaches including creative, play, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), systemic and person-centred therapies.

I don’t believe there is a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. Each child or young person is unique with their own particular worries, issues, history and situation. Because of this, I use the therapeutic approach that best suits the young person and the concerns that they bring to counselling.

I have worked with children and young people for much of my career; firstly in education as a primary school teacher, deputy headteacher and headteacher; then as a qualified children and young people's counsellor.

I worked as a school counsellor prior to setting up in practice at Archway Health and Wellbeing, and have experience working with a range of issues including:

• Bereavement

• Self-harm

• Anxiety

• Anger

• Depression

• Abuse

• Eating disorders

• OCD

• Long Covid

• Trauma

• Family breakdown

• Neurodiversity e.g. autism, ADHD, dyslexia

.

Practice description

I understand that seeking counselling support for yourself or for your child can be a daunting experience. Taking that first step may be hard, but I’m here to help you access the right support.

There are more pressures on young people than ever before: exams, relationship issues, social media, family breakdowns, gender issues, fears for the future, traumas from the past, the impact of the pandemic. In my experience, even if a child or young person knows what they want to say or what they need, they may still find it difficult to talk to those closest to them for a whole range of reasons. Which is why a compassionate counsellor can make a difference.

I can’t promise that counselling will make every problem disappear overnight – but I do offer a safe space where young people are able to explore their emotions and say what they feel in confidence and without judgement. It’s a powerful tool - and a great place to start.

My first session

All clients are offered a free 20-minute consultation,

This enables us to meet and for the client to decide if I am the right counsellor for them. This connection in therapy is very important as the child or young person needs to feel that I am someone that they can trust and talk to.

After that, sessions last 50 minutes. These include an initial assessment designed to gather background information, as well as finding out more about why the young person has come to counselling and what they hope to achieve through therapy.
